When you think corks, you think wine bottles and that’s where its believed this part of Toronto gets its name. In the early 1800s, the original Irish settlers, many from the County Cork found work at the prevalent local breweries and brickworks.
South from the Don River, then west to Jarvis, and Queen Street East down to Front Street is where you will find Corktown.
Corktown is the first community of its kind to be conceived in the heart of Toronto; it’s also one of its most historic neighbourhoods. Sadly, a big portion of Corktown was demolished to make way for progress in the form of elevated highways.
