A little history

This area grew up as Bedford Park, a hamlet and stopping point for farmers on their way to market along Yonge. It likely took its name from the Bedford Park Hotel, which opened at Yonge and Fairlawn in 1873. In 1890 Bedford Park joined Davisville and Eglinton to form the Town of North Toronto, the same year streetcar service arrived, and Toronto annexed the town in 1912.

Homes you'll find

West of Yonge: mid-sized detached and semi-detached houses, mostly built between 1890 and 1940, on lots that are often 20 to 25 feet wide. Many have been renovated, and plenty of older homes and bungalows have been replaced with custom new builds.

East of Yonge: a smaller pocket of detached houses on streets near Wanless Park and the Rosedale Golf Club.

Mixed in: condos, mid-rises and apartments above shops along Yonge.

What homes cost

Detached and semi-detached houses are the main event, with new custom builds at the top of the range. Condos along Yonge are the lower-cost way in. For the latest TRREB numbers, see the nearby market data, or ask us for recent sales on the streets you're looking at.

What we love

It's easy. Lawrence station is a short walk for most streets, Yonge has everything from comic books to pubs, and Highway 401 is a few minutes up the road. The side streets are quiet and leafy, and you're close to the ravines and parks of the original Lawrence Park just south.

The honest take

  • Narrow lots, shared driveways. Many lots are 20 or 25 feet wide, and mutual driveways are common. Check the parking situation carefully.

  • Construction next door. Rebuilds are common, so expect the odd excavator on your street.

  • Yonge Street traffic. Yonge is busy, especially near the 401, and it spills onto side streets at rush hour.

  • Older houses. Original homes can come with older wiring, plumbing and foundations. Get a good inspection.
